Getting to the root cause of brain based imbalances
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder marked by pervasive problems with attention, and in many cases, impulsive and hyperactive behaviour as well. These often lead to a range of behaviour issues, causing significant challenges in school and at work, and interfering with social development and peer interactions. ADD/ADHD is a national health crisis that continues to grow - yet it remains one of the most misunderstood and incorrectly treated illnesses today.
Statistics show that approximately 10% of children between the ages of 2 and 17 have been diagnosed with ADHD. To further complicate things, it is not uncommon for a child with this condition to also have a learning disorder, thus adding to the academic challenges they face. While the symptoms of ADHD emerge in childhood, if left untreated, they can persist throughout a person’s life. In fact, the National Institute of Mental Health has found that 5.4% of adult men and 3.2% of adult women have ADHD, and other research has shown that only about 20% of them have ever been diagnosed or received treatment. This condition is often overlooked in females because their primary issue is inattention, and they are less likely to exhibit the disruptive hyperactivity that is so often seen in males with ADHD.
Further more, statistics show that 33% of kids with ADHD never finish high school (3 times the national average) so they end up in jobs that don’t pay well. Another study has found that children with untreated ADHD are nearly twice as likely to develop an alcohol use disorder or other substance abuse problem, and that they tend to start using at an earlier age compared to other kids.

distractibility
procrastination
disorganisation
problems with follow-through
poor impulse control (e.g. speak before thinking)
It’s important to know that some of the symptoms of ADHD overlap with those of other mental health conditions, including oppositional defiant disorder, anxiety, autism spectrum disorder, and bipolar disorder, but the underlying cause and appropriate treatment for each is considerably different.

poor academic performance
substance abuse
incarceration
traffic accidents
job failure and unemployment
financial problems

ADHD arises from a complex interplay of genetic, neurological, and environmental factors. Contributing causes include inherited traits, brain structure and function differences, prenatal exposures (e.g. alcohol, tobacco), early childhood trauma, nutritional imbalances, toxin exposure, and chronic stress. Each individual’s ADHD has a unique root cause profile requiring personalised assessment.
Having a first-degree relative with ADHD significantly increases the risk for it. And while genetics, low birth weight, birth trauma, maternal smoking and alcohol or drug use, jaundice, brain infections, and head injury can play a causative role in ADHD symptoms, the increase in people being diagnosed with it is also likely related to numerous unhealthy influences in our world today that negatively affect brain function.
Perhaps the biggest thing to remember in the assessment and treatment of ADHD is the interplay of external ( lifestyle ) and internal ( factors affecting brain chemistry ) that combine to create such a disorder in brain function.
poor oxygen delivery to the brain ( eg anaemias, no exercise )

The first discovery consultation assesses your ADHD symptoms looking for frequency and severity. We examine lifestyle correlations involving patterns of sleep issues, stress related factors, dietary factors et al. We also examine any past blood tests looking for influencing factors. We will also make recommendations for up to date lab tests as deemed necessary.
In the second discovery consultation we correlate up to date lab tests with the overall symptom picture to get to the root cause of ADHD symptoms. In te second consultation you have the option of a qEEG brain assessment that will show in real time your brain activity and highlight areas of concern. In the second consultation we also discuss the importance of new lifestyle habits, brain dietary program and nutritional and herbal supplementation.
In the third discovery consultation we mark ongoing progress and adjustments as previously discussed.

Functional neurology Q & A
Root cause analysis in ADHD treatment is vital for uncovering underlying contributors - such as nutritional deficiencies, trauma, gut imbalances, or neuroinflammation - allowing for personalised, targeted interventions beyond symptom suppression, and supporting long-term brain and behavioural health.
Functional neurology focuses on identifying and rehabilitating specific brain networks involved in ADHD, using non-drug interventions. Mainstream medicine typically relies on diagnostic criteria and medication, with less emphasis on underlying neurological function or personalised treatment.
The success rate of functional medicine and functional neurology in the treatment of ADHD varies by individual, but many practitioners report significant improvement in 60–80% of patients, particularly when underlying causes are accurately identified and addressed.
Mainstream ADHD drug treatments may cause side effects like insomnia, appetite loss, anxiety, or mood swings. They often manage symptoms rather than address root causes, and long-term reliance can affect brain chemistry and emotional regulation.
